The Snipe Jr. World Championship fifth and final day was a battle to the end with only one point separating the leading two boats at the start of the day, with two more races left to complete the regatta.
All 42 junior competitors from 11 countries started the day with a mini-air show by the US Navy, watching jets take off and land at Naval Air Station Coronado during the five mile tow from San Diego Yacht Club to the race course, about 3 miles off Zuniga Jetty.
Race 10 started in lighter breeze than the competitors have experienced all week, from a Westerly direction at about 10 knots. Seven boats were called over early, yet did not return to clear themselves, shortening the fleet for the duration of the race. USA’s Nicholas Voss and crew Nevin Snow took race 10 and lead competitors around the course in the top three at each mark rounding.
The breeze started to shut off, and the initial attempt at race 11 ended in abandonment when the first boat did not reach the first windward mark within 20 minutes, as stipulated in the class championship guidelines. Attempt number two began with a shorter course in about five knots of breeze and was a success. Tyler Sinks and crew Shone Bowman from USA won race 11, with Mario Tinoco and crew Mateus Gonçalves (BRA) finishing eighth. In order for Tinoco and Gonçalves to win the title, they had to stay within four places of Norihiko Kiyama and crew Kenichi Inada (JPN), and they did just that when Kiyama and Inada finished 7th.
The highlight of the day was when the Brazilian team of Tinoco and Gonçalves crossed the finish line, knowing they had won the regatta, and did a celebratory swim and tipped the boat over, standing on the bottom of the boat waving their country flag.
Their celebration is well deserved, as Mario Tinoco is the first sailor in history to win three biennial Snipe Jr. World Championships, his first four years ago as crew, then two years ago as skipper and again today.
