A internationally well-known sailor and rigger died this week when he fell from the mast of a 73ft yacht he was rigging in Genoa. Giuliano Gallo, 48, Italian principal of the rigging firm Nautilia, was engaged in maintenance work 12 metres off the deck of the yacht.
The incident happened on the Guardiano yards of Molo Giano. A doctor was on the spot and attempted to resuscitate Gallo after the incident without success.
Gallo, who was from Milan, but resident in Savona, was wearing a harness and using safety equipment, and it is not clear why he fell.
Giuliano has been around the world in the World ARC, twice sailed the Around Europe Race, and raced as a paid hand on many racing boats.
Fifteen years ago he started his own rigging and deck hardware company called Nautilia, and served many times as a specialized winch technician with Harken regatta service in the field.
