Sail-World New Zealand- 6 August 2009
by . on 6 Aug 2009

Welcome Sail-World.Com's New Zealand's newsletter for 6 August 2009
New Zealand crews have taken Gold and Silver medals at the 420 World Championships in Lake Garda, Italy. We have reports from Yachting New Zealand on the final day of the regatta.
In two other World Championships being sailed in Sweden, New Zealand crews are performing very well. Also courtesy of Yachting NZ we have reports on the Star Worlds and the Laser Europeans. Many thanks to YNZ's Jodie Bakewell-White for the great work she does keeping track of all these regattas.
Overnight, Societe Nautique de Geneve announced the venue for the 33rd America's Cup, as a location in the Persian Gulf. The move has been rumoured for several weeks and the announcement was bought forward by a day after several media outlets ran the story ahead of the announcement including Sail-World. The announcement was not unanticipated by BMW Oracle Racing, who late last month placed SNG on notice that the announcement of a venue anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere other than Valencia, or one agreed by mutual consent would result in recourse to the New York Courts.
That is now expected to happen. It is probably inevitable that an Appeal process will start rolling over these issues or the Constructed in Country rules, of which there is no clear definition in the Deed of Gift, and Sail-World is aware that the Challenger and Defender do not share the same view in this regard.
In this issue we have broached the subject of terrorism and sailing - both in respect of the America's Cup venue and also an incident in Spain last last week just before the start of a major sailing regatta.
While some may be of the view that sailing is above this sort of thing, we suggest that the sport is not. And to get a view on both these 'hot-spots' we have consulted with Dr Paul Buchanan, a well known NZ media commentator on international security. It was a very interesting story to write, particularly in the light of our experience at the 2008 Olympics and disruption caused by the creation and maintenance of 'clean' areas.
Certainly a lot of the things we take for granted in New Zealand, are sadly not so, overseas.
Good sailing!
