2009 ORC International European Championship. Ralf Aspholm’s Sinergia 40 DataCom has taken an early lead in Championship, winning the first 21.3-mile short offshore race today by a slim margin of 35 seconds over Ingvar Hertzman’s IMX 40 Du Soleil II.
Even though racing in sunny light air conditions, the fleet’s competition in corrected time has been tight, as the first four places were decided within only 1 minute calculated for over 3.5 hours of sailing.
DataCom and 22 other teams in the competition are now on their way on the long offshore race, which will be a 100-mile contest taking the fleet from the start near Klostergrundet-S 27 miles to Langagrund, 20 miles to Svartgrund, 19 miles to Ystads redd, 17 miles to Kullagrund, and then another 17 miles to the Finish near Ystad harbor. Depending on conditions, teams are expected to finish sometime tomorrow evening or early Thursday morning. As each team is rounding each mark, they will be reporting by VHF 21 to Stockholm Radio.
