2009 Baltic Sprint Cup winners announced

Uwe Lebens from Germany and his crew brought 'Scho-ka-kola' to First Home honours for the third and final time of the 2009 Baltic Sprint Cup. 'Scho-ka-kola' crossed the finish line at the entrance to Travemuende harbour at 13:38 local time on Friday (31 July).

But the overall victory went to the Dutch team of Frans van der Heijden on 'Daikin Airco'. At the same time the International German Youth Championships continued on five race courses of the 120th Travemuende Week with Hamburg-based youngster Florian Haufe celebrating an early title with one race short in the female Olympic class Laser Radial.

The 17.4 metre RP56 yacht 'Scho-ka-kola' has claimed line honours in three of the four Baltic Sprint Cup legs and was immediately listed at the top of the leaderboard. However, her overall position was short lived when, 45 minutes later, the 15.9 metre yacht, 'Aquis Granus' (Germany) followed Scho-ka-kola across the line and beat her by 7 minutes and 8 seconds on corrected time. But at the end of the day this doesn’t affect the overall scoring on IRC too much because van der Heijden’s Ker 11.3 'Daikin Airco' claimed the last and final bullet by some 20 minutes from 'Scarlet Jester' skippered by Stephen Gosling from Great Britain. Third on the last leg and second overall came 'Gunvør XL' sailed under the flag of Canada by Sheila Cooke-Witt and Karsten Witt.

The remainder of the Baltic Sprint Cup fleet were expected to be in port after midnight on Saturday to join the celebrations of the 120th Travemuende Week over the weekend and the final prize-giving taking place in the Luebeck Yacht Club at 19:00.
