International German Youth Championship Day Two

by Andreas Kling on 30 Jul 2009
TW09 Opti start - International German Youth Championships - Travemuende Week Travemuende Week http://www.travemuender-woche.ne

On the second day of the International German Youth Championships Muriel-Natalie Schroeder from Potsdam, Germany sailed ahead of all the boys and a total of 221 other Optimists. She leads with only 20 points on her account. The current European Champion Maximilian Hibler (22 points) and compatriot Nils Carstensen with 27 points (both from Germany) are close behind her.

Light and varying winds brought tough sailing conditions on the Bay of Luebeck but did not stop the sailors on all five race courses. Up to three races could be finished in each of the eight youth classes. When it comes to sailing, the female sailors are able to beat the so called stronger sex especially in the youth classes. Muriel-Nathalie Schroeder, winner of race six in the Optimist class scored a fourth and a second in the previous races, took the overall lead in the huge mixed class.

Surfer Rudolphe Roche from France was two times ahead of his German competitors and leads overall in the BIC Techno 293 class, followed by Mick Moenning from Berlin. Sixteen years old local hero Benedikt Hattich from Luebeck, Germany climbed to third place. Konrad Lipski from Poland was the overall leader after day one but had to cope with rank five on the second day of racing.

The International German Youth Championship, sailed in eight classes will continue until Saturday, August 1 and sees about 900 young sailors from eleven nations competing in the Baltic Sea. Fresh to strong breezes are forecasted for Thursday (30 July), when the 420 and Laser Radial are split into gold and silver fleets with all the others continue their regatta as before.
