JD’s Boatshed – new Cobalt models coming
by Bob Wonders on 28 Jul 2009

Another new model for 2009 from the Cobalt range, the sleek 262 is destined to turn heads. Cobalt Boats
JD’s Boatshed operates from modern, purpose-built premises on Captain Cook Drive, at Caringbah, in Sydney’s south and boasts a spacious showroom and efficient workshop.
Mark Wellstead, operations manager at Sydney’s JD’s Boatshed, is well aware the boating industry has been ‘battered’ by the global financial crisis, but his confidence remains high.
'We have been able to maintain turnover and the winter months are generally quieter than normal, anyway,' he explained.
'Nevertheless, enquiries are definitely lifting and we’re looking forward to the Sydney International Boat Show where we will release several new models, particularly some delightful new boats by Cobalt.
'I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that Cobalt produces one of the finest ranges of recreational craft in the world and in the three-years that JD’s Boatshed has been the NSW dealer we have enjoyed considerable success with the marque.'
Although JD’s Boatshed is in fact the NSW dealer for Cobalt, the dealership’s proprietor, Dennis Souvleris is also the Australian importer of the renowned US breed and has established Cobalt dealerships in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.
In addition to its Cobalt range, JD’s Boatshed is also a dealer for Evinrude and Tohatsu outboard engines, Sea Doo personal watercraft, Glastron and Tournament ‘glass boats and for the Brisbane-based Formosa aluminium boat range.
The dealership currently employs a staff of 15, five of them qualified marine mechanics and two apprentices.
Cobalt, I particular, has an envied reputation worldwide for its boats and I recall first sighting what was to me an unknown brand name at a Miami International Boat Show some 20 or so years ago.
At the time I was incredibly impressed with the standard of finish, design and built integrity of the breed and I know that has not changed in the ensuing years.
Based in the unusually-named Kansas town of Neodesha, Cobalt boats are born a long way from the world’s oceans, but believe me, they handle oceans as well as they handle lakes and inshore waters.
Cobalt is definitely a breed apart – if outstanding finish and superb inclusions are what you have in mind when considering a new boat, whatever you do check out the Cobalt range.
If visiting (mad if you don’t!) the 2009 Sydney International Boat Show which opens on Thursday, July 30) you’ll find JD’s Boatshed and the Cobalt range in Hall 2 of the Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre.
