Switch UK Championship at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy - Overall

by Mark Jardine 29 Sep 07:41 PDT 26-28 September 2025

There were uncertain glances towards the waters of Portland Harbour as the fleet rigged on Sunday for the deciding day of the inaugural Switch One Design UK Championship.

The North-Westerly breeze was light and bandy, leading many to worry that they'd end up lowriding while those in the puffs would sail around them. As it was, the forecast breeze came in, providing the foiling fuel for the sailors to strut their stuff.

At the top of the fleet Fin Dickinson and Sam Whaley went into the day on equal points, thanks to the unique 'daily ranking' scoring system, so it was all on the line. Fin took wins in the first two races, with Sam just behind him in the first race, but then fast-improving youth sailor James Crossley and female superstar Hattie Rogers took second and third respectively in the second race, relegating Sam to fourth.

Sam bounced back with a win in race 3, but Fin was right on his tail to wrap up the win overall, and Matt Beck pulled off a storming result in the final race with a win cementing his place on the podium.

Kyle Stoneham, who recently finished second in the UK Moth Championship finished fourth and first Master overall, and is fast getting to grips with what modes make the Switch go fast. With his dedication to foiling, and determination to win, he'll undoubtedly be a name to watch as the fleet grows. Matt Reid and double Olympic medallist Simon Hiscocks completed the Masters podium.

James Crossley, as top youth, was the lucky recipient of a Cyclops smartlink atto, and will now be able to consistently measure and then set vang load, thanks to this tiny marvel of technology which is heavily used by the top Moth sailors. Hugh Doyle and Ben Anderson completed the youth podium.

Hattie Rogers and Elysia O'Leary mixed it up in the female fleet, with Hattie using all her racecraft to finish eighth overall, showing bursts of awesome speed at times. Louisa Nordstrom finished third on the female podium.

The Switch is off to a fantastic start in the UK, with the event universally hailed as a huge success. Demo, new and used boats are available, so contact to book your go in the fastest one-design foiling monohull around.

With 60 boats at the recent Global Championship, the Switch is taking off on the continent, with high female and youth turnouts pointing to more future growth. A shipment of new boats is arriving in the USA imminently, as this truly global class sets up for a stellar 2026. Is it time for you to make the switch?

Many thanks indeed to sponsors Ronstan, Vaikobi, Element 6, Cyclops and Shock Sailing for their support!
