US Sailing.org . www.ussailing.org
Three races are in the books after day one at the 2009 U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, a US SAILING National Championship event sponsored by LaserPerformance.

The Hampton Yacht Club (Hampton, Va.) is the host for the 37 teams competing for the Ida Lewis Trophy in Club 420s. The field of competitors range in age from 13 to 18 years old in this three-day OPEN event.

The team of Georgie Ryan (San Diego, Calif.) and Haley Kirk (Long Beach, Calif.) won the first two races of the day. They finished fifth in the third and final race of the day. Trailing Ryan and Kirk by two points is Chanel Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Yuri Namikawa (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.). Miller and Namikawa finished fifth, third, and first. Ryan and Kirk have a sizeable 13 point lead over the third place team, Deirdre Lambert (Cumberland, Maine) and Tracy Doherty (Sea Cliff, N.Y.), who finished 12th at their first U.S. Youth Sailing Championship in June. Only seven points separate teams third through seventh after day one.

Breeze was steady today on Chesapeake Bay at 10 to 15 knots on a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the low 80s. The 2009 U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship resumes on Friday morning, and runs through Saturday.
