With slow winds prevailing, Rambler, a 90 ft. Reichel Pugh, is leading the fleet, passing Brazil Rock early this afternoon, expecting to finish sometime tomorrow. Diminishing winds have challenged the best of skippers and crew, requiring the most patient of race strategies.
At this point, a total of six yachts have withdrawn, some using the opportunity to cruise along the Maine coast.
Preliminary information from FIS Tracking Services, LLC indicates the following yachts are leading their respective fleets, though this is not on corrected time (not confirmed):
Standings as of approximately four PM Eastern Standard Time, this afternoon:
IRC-1: Rambler
IRC-2: Clover III
PHR1: Donnybrook
PHR2: Cutlass
PHR3: Harrier
PHR 4: Mojoe
PHR 5: Sinn Fein
PHR 6: Jeroboam
PHC 1: Ticonderoga
Multi-Hull: Swamp Fox
In a report from Chippewa, a Swan-68, ”The crew of Chippewa Joyfully announced the arrival of Baby Huey, a 5 pound beautiful bouncing lasagna. After our 1430 start, Chippewa snapped off a quick 20-25 miles.
To reward outstanding crew work, the skipper ordered Baby Huey to be prepared for duty. A moment of high anxiety ensued when it was discovered that the frozen Baby Huey was too large for the galley stove. Immediate crew action saved the day as Baby Huey was expertly cleaved into twins, and then thoroughly warmed for eager consumption.
Following Baby Huey, a long night of constant shifts and numerous sail changes ensued. By dawn, a long no-wind watch developed. The 0600-1000 watch clicked off around 24,000 linear feet in a four hour period. We are now in fresh breeze and making tracks toward Halifax. This is skipper Clay Deutsch wishing all well from Chippewa, and the Chipppewa Food Network.”
About the 2009 Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race: The running of the 2009 Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race (MHOR) is preceded by a long and prestigious history. The race began in 1905 as an informal competition among sailors from the Boston, Eastern, and New York Yacht Clubs. Since that time, the Marblehead-to-Halifax Ocean Race has run regularly on alternate years from the Newport Bermuda Race, as one of the pre-eminent ocean races of the North Atlantic.
