illbruck stretches lead in Volvo Ocean race
by Volvo ocean race media on 24 Mar 2002
For the leading yacht illbruck the wind has continued to oscillate. They continue to gybe downwind with every shift - approximately every 1.5 hours - and have gained another 10 miles on their competitors, stretching their lead to almost 40 miles.
ASSA ABLOY and Tyco are within three miles of
each other, watching every move the opposition is making.
Amer Sports Too has gybed back onto starboard and is converging with
djuice, the yacht they want to cover on the way to Miami. They are
determined to keep up the pace as Emma Westmacott wrote: “…so there is to
be no slacking, dosing, lack of concentrating, we have got this far, it
would be gutting to lose it now. So drag out the extra coffee and keep
going...”
Another tight tactical battle is going on between Amer Sports One and News
Corp. Shortly after Amer Sports One gybed, News Corp followed suit to keep
the leverage they need if they want to pass over the next days.
