Powerboat P1 has entered into a strategic partnership with Magneti Marelli, an international subsidiary of the Fiat Group committed to the design and production of hi-tech systems and components for the automotive sector.

The Milan-based company already develops specific electronic systems for Formula One, Moto GP and the World Rally Championship and the Magneti Marelli technology will reveal more about boat performance in the Powerboat P1 World Championship.

Information such as engine data can be sent back to shore, improving engine longevity in the process and providing crucial information for Powerboat P1 Management, race control and P1 teams alike.

After a successful testing session on Evolution class boat Cigarette Smash Poker in the opening Grand Prix of the Sea in Malta earlier this month, the plan is to add a boat from the SuperSport class to the test programme this season, with the long-term goal being to roll out the programme across the championship in 2010.

Keyvan Sangelaji, Global Business Development Director at Magneti Marelli, said: 'We believe Powerboat P1 World Championship has the right combination of technology, competition, show and mostly people which will grant the series a growing future. This is a good opportunity for Magneti Marelli to join this challenge providing the series with its technology and experience.'

Andy Hindley, Powerboat P1’s Racing & Event Director commented: 'The addition of Magneti Marelli as a strategic partner is another example of the forward thinking of P1. We are committed to pushing the technology envelope in powerboating and to providing information and services to our teams and our fans.'
