Team Edake - Korean Match Race Qualifier David Chapman
The Edake Team is in Korea to compete in a World Match Race Cup Qualifier event. The event is on the west coast of Korea and runs for four days from Wednesday through to Saturday and is in being staged at the new Jeongok Marina in San Hwasung City.
They will return on Sunday to race in the CYCA Audi Winter Series to continue with their defense of the Division B crown.
David Chapman (ranked 135) will be helmsman with Jeff Carter (owner of the Farr 40) on mainsheet, Michael Edmonds on trim, Sam Sexton in the pit and Sammy Price on the bow.
David is a graduate of the RSYS youth sailing program. Sam Sexton was a graduate of the RPAYC youth program and won last year's Harken International as part of the team. Mike Edmonds is a graduate of the RNZYS and was part of the team that won the Hardy Cup while Sam Price is the other Kiwi in the team and does bow on Edake.
The first day of training in the Bakewell White designed 36 footers was completed on Tuesday in winds of around 8 to 10 knots. Commenting on the first day Jeff said 'being in the middle of the boat and the oldest person in the regatta (by a long way!) was very taxing on the body but was great fun. We are the only team here representing Australia.
The two Kiwis are adopted Aussies anyway. There are five international teams that are vying for the opportunity to compete in the World Match Cup at the same location against some of the biggest names in match racing. It would be a great thrill to achieve such a result.'
The competition will be tough. The other top ranked competitors at this regatta include the experienced New Zealander’s Laurie Jury (68), Reuben Corbett (79), Japan’s Kan Yamada (143) and US Olympian Sally Barkow with an all female crew of six, versus the male crews of five. There will be five Korean teams also competing in the event.
Australian David Tallis is PRO for the event. Round robin racing commences Wednesday 13 May.
