Perini 4th after first day of Mumm 30's at Acura SORC
by Shawn McBride on 9 Mar 2002
The second day began in stark contrast to the first at the Acura SORC. Competitors awoke to find clear blue skies
and light winds replacing the gray and gloomy conditions of the previous day.
The Farr 40s racing on the Acura Course off Government Cut were joined today by 12 Mumm 30s. In the Farr competition, which is also the US
National Championships, results were mixed due in no small part to light, shifty conditions. Hasso Platner's Morning Glory moved from third to first
overall with a second, first and disappointing 18th place finish in the day's three races. Plattner holds a one-point lead in the standings over defending
Acura SORC Farr 40 champion John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti.
Plattner, CEO of SAP AG, on his day on the water, 'It was nice to see the sun. We had a bit of an uneven day but we're still in the thick of things. This
is an excellent group of boats in the Farr 40 class and I like our chances over the next two days.'
In Mumm 30 racing, Dan Cheresh's USA320 recorded two firsts and a third place to establish the early lead in the class. Australian Richard Perini's Foreign Affair had a mid-fleet 6th, a second and a 4th to be in fourth place.
On the Sailing World Course the Jboats, J/80s and J/105s, entered the fray, joining the IMS and PHRF competitions that commenced yesterday.
George David's Idler continued his unbeaten streak in the IMS class, recording three first place finishes on the day and establishing Idler as the
hottest boat of the regatta. Matching Idler's three wins was Garth Dennis' Smiling Bulldog who has only a second place blemish on the ledger in two
days racing and has taken control of the PHRF 2 competition.
In J/80 racing, Geoffrey Pierini's Bada Bing answered the bell and notched a second and two firsts. Nipping at the Metuchen, NJ-based yacht's lead is
Matthew Baker's Hyperdrive, only two points behind.
The Acura SORC resumes tomorrow with racing at 10:00am.
The Acura SORC, in its 61st year, is one of the premiere participatory race-weeks in sailing, featuring approximately 100 racing sailboats and more
than 1,500 participants including America's Cup sailors, business leaders and ocean navigators from around the world in a week-long lifestyle festival in
