See You Soon Rio
So here we are, some 50 nm away from Rio. Now we've got only the local
fishermen and shipping to contend with. The local fishermen move about in
little makeshift wooden boats with their lines and without nav lights.
They are difficult to see in the light of day and as we have rain and poor
visibility, even more difficult to see now and at night. What would a leg
of this race be for us without some 'on the wind’?
Yup, we are on the wind and in the rain for our final few miles at sea.
It’s funny though, you know when you are getting close to finish: with
chatter on the VHF radio, ships passing in the night, fishing craft and
soon the loom of land ahead. We are looking at yet another unsociable hour
to finish in, to wake up the race committee, the locals, the shore crew
and any loved ones who will greet us. Even the boat thinks it's time to
finish as even the wind instruments refuse to work. See you soon Rio.
