English Harbour - growing drug-based crime problems SW
The sailing community of one of the Caribbean's most famous anchorages and resorts has been shocked by the shooting death of an Australian professional yacht skipper.
English Harbour and the island of Antigua, where many Australians visit if they charter a sailing boat for a Caribbean holiday, is one of the most attractive and famous of all the Caribbean yachting destinations.
Queenslander Drew Gollan, Captain of the 163 ft Perini Navi yacht Perseus has been shot dead by would-be robbers.
Gollan was walking in the vicinity of English Harbour after a dinner ashore with his wife and young child, when the bungled robbery took place.
According to locals, the tragic death is just one more sympton of the increasing drug problem that the island has been battling recently.
There have been other attacks on yachtsmen and tourists, with growing seriousness, with criticism of local police for their inactivity.
Antigua is at the height of the holiday and yacht charter season, and the incident is likely to have an extremely negative effect on future holiday makers, both water and land-based.
