Two points separate three sailors in Starling Nationals - Day 4

by Event Media on 20 Jan 2009
Just two points separate the top three sailors after four days of racing in the 2009 Starling Nationals at Whangarei.

The day started with a 15-20 knot SW breeze and the fleet started all races today clearly without any recalls. Once again with a rain squall coming through, there was the odd bent mast and broken center board. Thomas Saunders (Tauranga) had a fantastic day at the front of the blue fleet with a 1, 1, 2 record for the day.

He spent much of the day racing head to head with his training partner from Tauranga, Luke Stephenson, who had a 3, 6, and then went on to win the last race. Chris Steele (Wakatere) also sailing in the blue fleet, had several tactical battles with Thomas and Luke but after three wins yesterday had a second day of 2, 4, 3.

In the yellow fleet Marcus Hansen (Whangarei) started the day with a fourth place but had a very successful final two races to finish the day with two wins. In the first race of the day Briar Mannering (Napier) showed the boys how to sail around the course to finish second in the yellow fleet, but was Over the Start in the second race and lies 13th after 6 races.

Sam Bullock recovered from not finishing two races yesterday, due to broken forestays, to finish the day with a 5,2,3 result bring him back into the top half of the fleet.

Overall results after 6 races, with one discard:

1st Marcus Hansen (Whangarei) 6 pts

2nd Thomas Saunders (Tauranga) 7 pts

3rd Chris Steel (Wakatere) 8 pts

Racing continues tomorrow.
