Flying Dutchman Worlds Day 3 - Hungarian Sailors Dominate

by Tim Sandall on 8 Jan 2009
Hungarian sailors Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos (HUN 70) after racing day 3 - 2008 Flying Dutchman Worlds, Napier Kevin Hayton

Hungarian Sailors dominate at the Flying Dutchman Worlds in Napier with two bullets in races 5 & 6. Both races were completed in 5 to 7 knots of fluctuating North Easterly breeze.

Race 5 – Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos (HUN 70) led from start to finish winning by 40 seconds from Ian McCrossin and James Cook (AUS 33) closely followed by Kiwi’s Andrew Mckee and Matt Bismark (NZL 111).

Race 6 – The Hungarians sailors really stamped their authority on the regatta, increasing their lead at each mark by over 30 seconds to take the bullet by 3 minutes 38 seconds. The German pair of Kilian Konig/Johannes Brack (GER113) had a well deserved 2nd placing with ESP 6 Gines Remero and Alvaro Moreno (ESP 6) taking 3rd after the skipper had taken an unexpected dunking at the start of the previous race (race 5).

Overall placings see the Hungarians extending their lead to 6 points over Aussie’s McCrossin and Cook who are 6 points ahead of compatriots Rydge and Scarr (AUS 37). The leading Kiwi’s are McKee and Bismark tied on equal points with Scoffin and Ruzicka in 4th and 5th.

Friday the 9th is a lay day. Racing resumes on Saturday the 10th with a further two races and the regatta will concludes on the 11th with 1 race scheduled.
