Spanish pair win opening race at Flying 15 Worlds Pre-Event

by Sail-world.com/uk on 4 Jan 2009
First race of Flying 15 Australian Nationals 2009 Flying 15

Javier Chacartegui and Miguel Santaursula, from the Real Club Nautico, Spain won the opening race of the Flying 15 Australian Nationals, the Worlds pre-event, in Melbourne.

Melbourne turned on beautiful weather for Day 1 of the Australian Championship. In the Invitation Race, first place went to Brian Carroll and Michael Brown of Australia with David McKee of Britain in second place.

The breeze continued to build to a beautiful 12-15 knots for the afternoon's race - the first heat of the Australian National Championship (Pre Worlds).

When the real racing started, for the Flying 15 Australian Nationals, also the Worlds pre-event, it was the Spanish pair, Javier Chacartegui and Miguel Santaursula from the Real Club Nautico, Puerto Pollensa in Spain that took victory.

Boats that worked the righthand side on the first beat came out top at the first mark, with Alan Bax and Bill Masterman leading followed by the Spanish pair. Javier Chacartegui's Ffatigaos, is the only Spanish entry in the competition.

These positions remained unchanged until the final run when Baxy was penalised by the jury for pumping and had to do turns.

This let the Spaniards through and also Barry Parkin and Tim Hall who had recovered well. Chacártegui retained the lead to the line with Parkin second and Bax in third place.

Adrienne Rekke and Craig Coulan were the first placed Australian pair finishing in sixth place overall.

Aaron Goodmanson and Alister Rowlands of New Zealand were fourth with Mike Hart from Britain fifth.

No change in the Silver and Classics from this morning with Good Thing, Trevor Williams and Feel Flows, Andy McKee winning their respective divisions.
