Dutch pair lead FD Worlds Pre-Event in New Zealand

by Lyle Tresadern on 2 Jan 2009
FD Nat NZL start Ullman Sales .

Strong and building north westerly winds greeted sailors today as the race committee pushed to complete four back to back races in the NZ Flying Dutchman National Championship and Pre-Worlds regatta at the Napier Sailing Club.

After four races Dutch sailors Frank Nooijen and Marc van der Pol are leading with a consistent score card of 4, 2, 2, 2. Hungarian sailors Szabolcs Mathenyi and Andras Domokos (5 times FD World Champions) were the standout sailors convincingly winning the three races they started and hold third overall.

The leading New Zealand sailors are Paul Scoffin and Pavel Ruzicka holding second place.

Again as this is the Pre-Worlds and rig damage was a definite possibility today, many sailors opted to stay on shore and enjoy the fine wineries of Hawkes Bay.

With four races completed, one more race is required to make series on the final race day tomorrow, which is forecast to have more strong winds, giving a final test to gear, equipment and sailors fortitude.
