U.S. Men's Sailing Championship Six Times Champion

by Marlieke de Lange Eaton on 23 Sep 2008
U.S. Men’’s Sailing Championship US Sailing.org . www.ussailing.org
Since the U.S. Men's Sailing Championship was first held in 1952, the names of many of the country's top sailors have been engraved on the Mallory Cup, the trophy won by the regatta winners. But only one name will now be engraved a record six times: Scott Young.

The 49-year-old from Austin, Texas, first won the Championship as a crew in 1979 at the age of 20. Last Saturday, Young won the regatta once again, his fourth time as skipper. He also won the regatta in 1981 (crew), 1985 (skipper), 1987 (skipper), and 2006 (skipper).

This year's U.S. Men's Championship, hosted by San Francisco Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek Vineyard, delivered the excitement that San Francisco Bay often offers with high winds and waves that are the perfect formula for a strong regatta. The Austin Yacht Club team from Texas - made up of Young, John Morran, Doug Kern, and Mike Haggerty (all from Austin) - came prepared, as did the other ten teams. The Texans came on strong from the start, but so did the Buccaneer Yacht Club team of Ken Kleinschrodt (Mobile, Ala.), David Bolyard (Mandeville, La.), Michael Mark (Mobile, Ala.), Samson Vasquez (Gulfport, Miss.). The lead switched several times between these two teams, but in the end, Young and his team had the edge, winning by five points overall after 11 races.

The third place went to the team from Santa Barbara Sailing Club of Pat Toole, Dale Turley, George Witter, and Ed Chifferns (all from Santa Barbara, Calif.) after they finished just one point ahead of another Californian team, from Ventura Yacht Club. Les Beckwith of Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association with crew Charlie Quigley, J. Conor Hayes and Robert Beckwith won the Staton J. Peele, Jr. Sportsmanship Trophy
