Gilbert / Willan lead RS200 Nationals after day 3

by Sail-world.com/uk on 27 Aug 2008
Gul RS200 UK Nationals 2008 at HISC Around The Cans http://www.aroundthecans.co.uk

Roger Gilbert and Jane Willan took two more wins on day 3 of the Gul RS200 Nationals at Hayling Island SC.

With the first discard this gives them a clear five wins and they are 16 points ahead of Geoff Carveth and Lucy Macgreagor, who with a fifth and a fourth move into second. Tom and Jo Hewitson are in third place and James Stewart and Toby Lewis are fourth.

Day 3 dawned, much to the relief of competitors, with a reduced windspeed of 14knots and no rain in the sky. The race area was moved to directly above Hayling Bar and two three lap, 1hr 20min races run by the PRO – much to the amusement of the competitors already aching bodies!

Race 5 for the www.beminetoday.com Jug went to Roger Gilbert/Jane Willan. By a country mile. Behind though, the racing was close and intense. Nick Charles and Jules Kingsnorth had the grit between their teeth after a couple of disappointing races and showed their true form to come home second. Tom and Jo Hewitson rounded off the top three.

Race six for the Sailboat Deliveries Trophy was started in a freshening breeze. Gilbert/Willan were again utterly dominant, winning by miles. Charles/Kingsnorth were again second, with James Stewart/Tobytastic third. Early pacesetters Ben Saxton/Kate Macgregor also took the opportunity to show the fleet the importance of reading the sailing instructions, opting to do a 360 turn after hitting the mark and then berating other boats who didn’t follow suit ( the RS classes allow mark hitting ) – oops!!

That evening saw the fancy dress party, the theme being Nursery Rhymes & Fables. Clear winner for best outfit was Simon Fell wearing a ‘pea green boat’ with an owl and the pussy cat! Ian Pickard looked interesting as a wardrobe!! Everyone made a great effort though – and everyone was thoroughly broken by the end of the night.
