Optimists - start line(Singapore Championships) SingaporeSailing

The coincidence of the IODA European and North Americans in the same week means that around 440 sailors from 57 countries will be competing in IODA continental championships this week.

239 sailors from 39 countries are entered for the Europeans in Riva del Garda, Italy while around 200 from 25 countries will participate in the North American in Curaçao. Only seven countries have entered teams for the two events.

IODA European Championship

Day 1 of the championship produced two races though the course had to be shortened for some in the second race.

With most countries represented by their second teams (no sailor is allowed to sail in both the Worlds and the Europeans) results are rarely predictable at this event. But few would have expected to see a Hungarian, Fanni Pech, leading the girls' event and two ofher compatriots in the top ten of the boys' championship. Perhaps even more surprising is the third place (boys) held by Momir Nikolic from first time participants Montenegro.

But tomorrow is another day!
