Modral wins Bucks Match Race 3

by Laurie Jury on 16 Jun 2008
Match racing at Buckland’s Beach YC in J-24’s SW

Owen Modral a British citizen currently working in NZ, won the Bucks Match Race 3 sailed over the weekend.

The event was sailed in BBYC fleet of five J24 keelboats; the weather for the weekend was near perfect, except for the rain, with 42 races sailed in conditions varying between 7-20 knots.

Jonathan Rankine finished top of the table from the round robin and chose to race Modral in the semi final, this left Jury to face Robertson.

Modral defeated Rankine in the first race when Rankine was given a red flag penalty off the start line. In the second race Modral lead Rankine off the start and around the course. The other semi final was very close; Jury won the first race after Robertson hit the top mark during a tight luffing duel. Robertson took the second race as Jury was over early at the start. In the 3rd race Jury started to windward and held Robertson out to the port lay line. Robertson attacked hard down wind, but after more luffing and protest flags flying, Jury still held a small lead around the bottom mark. Jury extended up the 2nd beat and went on to win the race.

In the first race of the finals Modral looked in trouble at the start but managed to fit his boat into a small gap next to the committee boat. Up the beat Modral covered hard to take the lead and win the race. In the 2nd race Modral received 2 penalty’s before the start, Jury held a small lead around the top mark, but a bad bottom mark rounding put him behind up the 2nd beat, Modral gained enough up the 2nd beat to complete his penalty turn and win the event.
