Welcome to the mid-week edition of Sail-World.Com/NZ’s newsletter.
BlackMatch Racing are ready to go in the Korea Match Racing Cup which is the third stage of the World Match Racing Tour. They report that the opening ceremony was attended by 10,000 spectators.
Sailing the new www.bakewell-white.com!Bakewell-White 36’s which have been built in Korea specially for the event, BlackMatch will be joined by Tony Rae for this regatta.
Rae is a well known face in Emirates Team New Zealand circles, a twice winner of the America’s Cup, and will add some very useful experience to this already successful team.
Six of the top ten match racers in the world are competing at the event.
Another young New Zealand team is competing in the 470 Europeans at Lake Garda Italy. Carl Evans and Peter Evans’ performance has been like a curate’s egg – good in parts.
Their opening day saw them have two places in the late teens, before closing off with a win in their yellow fleet. The second day saw a much more consistent performance, with however then they revisited the first day blues – with 15, 14, 18 placings in the Gold fleet. Over 90 competitors are entered in the Mens event. Sorry we don’t have more information, but reports and photos are very hard to come by from this regatta.
With no New Zealand crew being sent to the 2008 Olympics in the Womens 470, there are no kiwi competitors in the Womens Championship - which has attracted just 33 competitors.
On the subject of the Olympics, in this issue Sail-World has announced some details of our 2008 Olympic coverage. The Sail-World Olympic Newletter will be along the lines of the highly successfully America's cup newsletter Sail-World published each day of sailing in the 2007 America's Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup.
The Sail-World Olympic Newsletter is an excellent and unique opportunity for advertisers to reach a world audience of around 50,000 subscribers on a daily basis. For sailing fans, it will be a 'must subscribe' to the free newsletter which we expect to be able to circumvent the media issues that have bedevilled every Sailing Olympics.
Sail-World will have our own journalists and photographers in Qingdao - on the water and around the sailing regatta to bring you the latest news, images and results as they happen.
Andrew Brown reports on his buildup for the International Moth Worlds. While the foiling Moths have always attracted the attention of media and fans, Brown looks to be breaking new ground with the introduction of EC6 Carbon rigging from www.southernspars.com!Southern_Spars. While carbon rigging is banned in most small boat classes (save for the development classes) 1.8mm carbon rod rigging is certainly an interesting development. Currently the attachment points have been designed and breaking loads tested. The machining of the rigging is being completed this week, ready for on the water testing.
One of the amazing aspects of current sailing technology is the way that it can be used on a supermaxi like Speedboat one month, and the next the same technology on a much smaller scale is being applied to an 11ft foiling Moth!
Another example of the application of kiwi technology into a new aspect of sailing is the sailing animation from Animation Research into the world's richest yacht race - dhow racing in Dubai. This event carries a purse of $2.5million. Have a look at the graphics produced by this great Dunedin company, and also take a look at the incredible sail areas carried by the racing dhows.
Finally, in this issue, we have included the latest edition of Yachting NZ's Briefings - which in turn features a report from YNZ President Jan Dawson on the state of the Kiwi yachting nation. For those interested in the 'beneath the bonnet' activities of Yachting New Zealand, it is a must read.
Good Sailing!
