'When women gain confidence on the water, they gain an understanding of their environment which in many instances is new to them.' says Carol Forsyth, Coastguard Boating Education's Northern Field Representative.
'Without inciting a mutiny, we think it's time women took a more proactive role in their boating activities.'
'Women on Board' Day Skipper classes aim to ensure safety on the water by teaching the rules of the road at sea, how to handle emergencies and more. This theory course is aimed at those new to boating whether it is messing about in dingys, powerboats, jetskis or sunbathing on a 40ft launch. Simple things like where the emergency flares are located, how to turn on the bilge pump and which is the port side all become part of life on board a vessel. To be a help not a hindrance, we are encouraging women to attend a course and become a more confidant and responsible boating person.
Women on Board Day Skipper courses are scheduled this year in various locations in NZ. For course enquiry and information please contact Coastguard Boating Education on 0800 40 80 90 or visit the website www.cbes.org.nz
