Fuel Tax will now support Boating Safety

Back in December last year Yachting New Zealand made a submission to Parliament on the Land Transport Management Amendment Bill.

This related to supporting an amendment contained in the above bill which would have the effect of some recovery of the excise tax on fuel taken from boaties.

Good news came recently with the announcement from government that funds derived from fuel tax used in pleasure boats would be used to fund boating safety and education. This funding is sorely needed and is expected to become available in the 2009-2010 year.

Currently none of the tax revenue from fuel purchased for boating is allocated to boating activity and safety; it is all put in to the National Roads Fund. Yachting New Zealand strongly supported the amendment to the bill which will see close to $25 million allocated to recreational boating in some form.

Tauranga Boys College win Teams Racing

Tauranga Boys College successfully defended their title at the Secondary Schools Teams Racing Nationals held at Parua Bay in Northland from 28 April to 2 May.

The winning team included Peter Burling, Jason Saunders, Thomas Saunders, Luke Stevenson (as skippers) and crews Nicholas Gunn, Ben Caundle, Jeremy Grundy, Oliver Brown.

This year’s expanded format saw 23 New Zealand schools and one team from the Cook Islands compete. Sailing in 420s on two courses an initial round robin was held to divide the schools into gold and silver fleets.

Light winds on the first few days created a few unexpected results with all the favoured schools making it into gold fleet, Westlake Girls being the only all girls school to make the top fleet. More wind later in the week challenged all the teams with exciting speed sailing on the reaches creating the usual spills and broken gear – apart from a few bent masts and gel coat repairs the event proceeded smoothly.

Westlake Boys High was well ahead on points at the end of the Gold round robin, however positions changed in the four team finals with Tauranga Boys College just edging out Mahurangi to earn the top two places while Macleans College came third.

The Girl’s team final was equally exciting with Westlake Girls having achieved the Gold fleet from the preliminary round robins going into the final and coming third behind Napier Girls first and Nelson Girls who were second.

The top three teams in the finals are invited to sail against the top three Australian teams at the Interdominion Teams Racing Regatta in October.

Sailability UK using New Zealand’s WETA tri

Sailability UK will soon have sailors on the water in New Zealand’s WETA trimaran. Mike Wood of Sailability UK first noticed the WETA at the London Boat Show and they have ordered six boats.

Chris Kitchen of WETA boats has been in the UK assisting Mike Wood with the conversion of the standard WETA adapting it for use by sailors with disabilities.

“They like having a lightweight performance boat with the capability of taking out able bodied friends,” says WETA’s Roger Kitchen. “We have manufactured over 150 boats and have dealers now in 12 countries, but the most exciting thing to happen has been the WETA development with Sailability UK.”
