It has been another bumper summer season for sailors. As always North Sails was in the thick of the action, with our sails and sailors featuring prominently in the results. As winter closes in, our team are busy helping clients to prepare for the new season and looking forward to the racing ahead.
Top to Top – Pachamama50
The TOP to TOP global climate expedition is a unique expedition to cross seven seas and climb seven of the world’s highest mountains using only human strength and power and the sun, rain and wind.
Dario Schworer and his young family are currently in Australia on route to New Zealand spreading the word of global climate change and the risks that all will ultimately face one day.
Since the summer of 2003, Pachamama has been the home to Dario, his wife Sabine and their two young children, Salina and Andri who have called their 50 foot aluminium yacht Pachamama home sweet home. With her they have sailed to some of the most remote places around the world all in aid of their TOP to TOP campaign to dedicate their lives to fight against climate change and the affect on both mother nature and their sporting activities.
Dario’s story has now crossed paths with North Sails Australia, where the Sydney loft have outfitted Pachamama with a new set of Spectra Gatorback cruising sails for their next journey south from Sydney. These sails are built using Gatorback to ensure a combination of inherent high stability while delivering a long term service life, rarely seen in other fabrics.
The Spectra Gatorback provides other great benefits to Dario as it is a fabric that is easy to handle, and its radial construction ensures load bearing and shape retention even when it is reefed.
Pachamama will be equipped with sponsor Victorinox logos splashed across their full batten mainsail of 68m2, a furling Genoa of 85m2, and staysail of 39m2, which North Sails Australia are confident will travel further across the great oceans without any concerns or worries.

Quest returns to success
After a short break, a name synonymous with the sport returned last summer. Successful long time campaigner, Bob Steel, launched the latest Quest last winter. North Sails were selected by Bob and Sailing Master Jamie McPhail to power the new boat, a Transpac 52 from the USA, and North Sails Julian Plante came onboard as Tactician.
After a promising start to the new season while sorting out the new boat in full TP52 configuration, North Sails advised on an IRC optimising program including conversion to the popular bow prod configuration, and new resized Asymmetric spinnakers designed in the Sydney loft.
Quest reached her potential at the Savills regatta to win the IRC division against Yendys and Wild Joe. At the Rolex regatta, Quest sailed a frustrating regatta after being holed and retiring from the first day.
Skandia Geelong Week brought greater success, as Quest scored a dominant regatta win in the IRC class with 3 race wins and 3 second places ahead of TP52’s Cougar and Wot Yacht.
Bob is now looking forward to a fast ride up the coast to Southport in July and Hamilton Island Race Week in August to complete the Audi IRC championship. The TP 52 has proved to be well suited to IRC racing, as well as fast and furious to sail in a breeze.
