Australia's most innovative ocean racing yachtsman and boat builder, Sean Langman, will present the annual Phil Renouf Memorial Lecture in the ANZ Theatre of the Australian National Maritime Museum on tomorrow evening, Thursday, 6 March.
Langman's ocean racing exploits have ranged from the so-called 'skiff on steriods', the Open 66 that he raced under the various names of Xena, Grundig and AAPT, to the restored 30-foot, wooden gaff-rigger Maluka, a Cliff Gale Ranger design originally built in 1932.
However, his enterprise as a businessman have seen him develop one of the major boat building and boat maintenance companies in Australia, with facilities in Berry's Bay, Woolwich Dock, Newcastle and Port Stephens as well as at Hamilton Island and at Dover, down the d'Entrecasteaux Channel in southern Tasmania.
Sean's address will be 'Boats and Boat People on Sydney Harbour' and there are few who can match his experiences of mixing with the boat people of Sydney Harbour, from riggers and shipwrights to 18-footer and Olympic sailors, blue water yachtsmen and the multi-millionaire owners of super maxis.
He is a remarkable and colourful sailor and boat-builder whose management skills have expanded Noakes Boats and Shipyards into a major service provider for the Australian leisure boating industry.
The Lecture tomorrow evening is from 6.15pm to 8.30pm, followed by cheese, wine and beer and the cost is $20 for Australian National Maritime Museum and Sydney Heritage Fleet members, $25 for guests. Bookings are essential on 02 9298 3644.
