A number of junior national championships recently took place at Torbay Sailing Club on Auckland’s North Shore.

Logan Dunning-Beck representing North Harbour won the P Class Tanner Cup for 2008 with a score card including four wins, giving him the win with a race to spare.

There were 46 competitors in this year’s P Class Tauranga Cup. The title went to James Turner from Taupo Yacht Club with a clear margin over second placed Logan Dunning-Beck from Wakatere Boating Club and Andrew McKenzie of Kohimaramara Yacht Club in third. Ashleigh Lamberg from Glendowie and Murrays Bay Sailing Clubs was the first female in fourth place overall taking home the Naomi James Trophy. Both contests were sailed in light to moderate Northerly breezes.

The Starling Inter-Provincial Match Racing Championship was won by last years Tanner and Tauranga Cup winner Thomas Saunders representing the Bay of Plenty. Thomas won the match racing event without a single loss, an outstanding performance.

The final regatta was the Starling National Championships, which had a huge fleet of 122 boats. The event took place in a variety of conditions testing the sailors’ capabilities over the twelve race series. Matt Vincent from the Nelson Yacht Club emerged as the winner scoring six wins from the twelve races. Four points back was Thomas Saunders from the Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club in second with Ben Goodwin from the Napier Sailing Club in third.

All four events ran extremely well which is a credit to Torbay Sailing Club and the numerous volunteers involved.
