'Monsoon' curtails youth match racing

Torrential rain, lightening, thunder and strong wind squalls sent the fleet scurrying for the marina at around 4pm on day two of the Harken International Youth Match Racing Championship at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Newport.
Despite interruptions due to a bad batch of jib halyards, it had been a good day up till then with a total of 34 matches now completed. 'We could have done without the storm though' quipped PRO Ted Anderson. At the top end of the scoreboard the host Club's Tom Spithill remains at 5 wins no losses whilst RPYC's Robert Gibbs now also has five wins but with two losses, the pair are yet to meet.
Most of the Umpire Team are just back from the Monsoon Cup, one of the strongest teams yet assembled for this event with many also having a LVC/AC tour of duty under their belt.
RPAYC's Sam Sexton was on the receiving end today in his match against David Chapman copping a penalty for shunting Chapman from astern in the pre-start. Approaching the bottom mark he bore away on to Chapman for a second penalty and then picked up a third (and consequently the black) for proceeding into the zone rather than away from it to take his second penalty as soon as possible. It’s a tough call to come into a Regatta straight after your HSC exams!
Good breeze is forecast for the remaining two days with up to 25 knots promised for the finals afternoon which should please the spectator fleet and photographers.
