Flying 15 Bulwark Trophy at Hayling Island SC

by Roger Palmer on 10 Oct 2007
Two wins on Saturday gave Alan Bax and Jamie the perfect score to win the 2007 Bulwark Trophy at Hayling Island SC. Twenty-seven Flying Fifteens turned out to compete for the weekend event sponsored by RoK. Light northeasterly winds were a feature of the Saturday racing run by Flying Fifteen sailor Jamie Jameson.

In the first race the fleet sped away with Charles Apthorp and Jonathan Clarke the early leader followed by Alan Bax and Jamie. Out to sea there was more favourable tidal stream whilst inshore a slightly stronger wind with a better angle could be found.

On the second beat of a three lap windward leeward course Alan Bax and Jamie tacked on to starboard inshore first and passed Apthorp/Clarke to take the lead.

At the downwind finish it was Bax/Jamie, Apthorp/Clarke with Jeremy Davey/Crewed by Tim Harper in third. Brett Dingwall crewed by Ben Dingwall thankfully back to racing after a long illness, came fourth with Class Chairman, Justin Waples, crewed by Ian Stowe from Grafham in fifth.

For the second race the fleet went away with the recall flag flying. Early race leaders were Pete and Sue Banister with Alan Bax/Jamie close behind. After two windward leeward legs a triangle followed with a leeward finish.

Alan Bax /Jamie prevailed followed by the Bannisters with Andrew Jameson/James Grant in third. Fourth was the consistent Class Chairman followed by Hayling Island S C Rear commodore, Mark Woods, crewed by Tim Rumfitt. Some boats who finished quite well were disappointed to find that they were among the six boats scored OCS.

The fleet sailed in to enjoy tea and RoK cakes followed by a champagne reception for all the crews courtesy of the sponsor.

Sunday dawned light and northerly. The fleet sailed slowly to sea. The sun came out, the wind died and the Race Officer, having waited a sensible time for more wind to appear, signalled the abandonment.

The fleet was towed ashore by committee boat, the ribs and passing yachts.
After yet more tea and cakes an early prize giving revealed the overall winners.

Fortune favours the Beneteaus!
Thank you, Huey… Some sun, and a tad of wind means it is time to go racing... Ahead of the annual Beneteau Pittwater Regatta by Flagstaff Marine the weather had not been all that grand. So, peaks of sun migrating to distinct patches, and the occasional zephyr turning into a waft, then on to a calm breeze was fortunate.
