HHYC to host 5th 24-Hour Charity

by HHYC on 29 Sep 2007
They’re off! The start of the HHYC 24hr Charity Dinghy Race 2006 Guy Nowell http://www.guynowell.com
Hebe Haven Yacht Club (Hong Kong) will be holding its fifth annual 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race on the weekend 6-7 October 2007. The event is the only 24-hr dinghy race in Asia, and only one of four world-wide. This year, the principal event sponsor is Hang Lung Properties Limited.

Local teams will be represented by all the major yacht clubs in Hong Kong (HHYC, RHKYC, ABC). Entries are also confirmed from organizations such as the Police Sailing School, Outward Bound, KGV, German Swiss International School, West Island and Clearwater Bay Schools, as well as individual and corporate entities. Other yacht clubs in Asia have also been invited to join the event, with a team from Shanghai already confirmed.

Sailed in the sheltered waters immediately in front of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club, the 24-Hour Dinghy Race offers a challenging event sailed around a short course (approx. 1 mile) that keeps the racing within sight of the Club and caters for children and adults who just want to ‘sail for charity’ as well as those who wish to make it a competitive race. Teams will race for 24 hours with ‘pit stops’ to change crews at intervals throughout the race.

Apart from the action on the water, Hebe Haven Yacht Club will be open to the public on both days, and will be featuring music, merchandise stalls, lots of children's entertainment and a raft race for children from local schools.

This year, HHYC hopes to raise HK$ 1million, with 70% of donations going to the Children’s Cancer Foundation. and 20% to Enlighten for Epilepsy. 10% will be donated to Sunnyside Club in keeping with the Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s mission statement to contribute to the local community.

This event is now well established on the HK sailing calendar and has proved to be an unqualified success with over HK$ 2.25 million raised for charity,to date This year HHYC anticipates that there will be 30 boats taking part with 450 competitors and over 100 volunteers.
