Over 85 of New Zealand’s yacht club Commodores will come together in Auckland on Saturday 4 August for the inaugural YNZ Commodores Conference. Also attending will be Councillors – representing our regions – together with Board members and Yachting New Zealand staff.
The driving concept behind this meeting of yacht club leaders is to hear and discuss matters of concern and opportunity, and to generate ideas to enhance our sport and sustain its future. The outcomes and recommendations drawn from discussion groups are intended to contribute to Yachting New Zealand’s next strategic plan.
Attendees will have received details on the schedule by email yesterday; the information is also available on our website through the link below.

ISAF Worlds – NZ earns 8 Olympic places
The ISAF Sailing World Championships concluded twelve days ago in Cascais, Portugal. New Zealand has come away from this regatta which is the principle qualification event for the 2008 Olympics in Qingdao, with two medals, and a place in eight out of eleven of the Olympic classes for next year. Amongst the teams results there were five in the top ten and a further three in the top 15.
Places are now qualified for New Zealand in Qingdao 2008 in the following classes…
Star Finn Laser Laser Radial Women’s RS:X Mens’s RS:X Yngling Women’s 470
Highlights at the Cascais World Championships were a silver medal for Andrew Murdoch in the Laser class, and another world championship medal for Barbara Kendall in the Women’s RS:X, who also picked up silver. Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams finished just outside the medals in 4th place in Star, while the kiwi Yngling crew led by Sharon Ferris achieved a season best to finish 6th.
Murdoch and Kendall are part of a small New Zealand team which will test the waters off Qingdao, China in just over a fortnight’s time at the Pre-Olympic test event. New Zealand will be sailing in seven of the Olympic classes in Qingdao this year, with a team of just nine sailors. Conditions in China are expected to be light in contrast to the blustery winds which Cascais produced.
Full results and news are available on the regatta website through the link below.

Two Silver Medals for NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team
New Zealand won two silver medals at the ISAF Youth World Championships which concluded over the weekend in Kingston, Canada.
The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team was third in the Volvo Trophy for overall team performance behind Australia and Denmark. It is the best result for a New Zealand team at this event in five years.
Silver medals came in the boy’s double-handed 29er class for Paul Snow-Hansen and Blair Tuke and for Josh Junior in the single-handed Laser class. New Zealand finished inside the top ten across the board in all seven classes contested at the event.
For Snow-Hansen (Wakatere Boating Club) and Tuke (Kerikeri Cruising Club) in the 29er, the silver medal was assured before the start of the final race with an unassailable points margin over third place. It’s an impressive result for the pair who has only been together a few months in the skiff class, although both are proven talented sailors with past wins in other junior and youth dinghies.
Josh Junior (Worser Bay Boating Club) was in second place heading into the last day although he needed a solid race to secure the silver medal with the Finnish and German sailors hot on his heals and within striking distance. Junior placed fourth beating his nearest rivals on the points table and won the silver medal for New Zealand.
Principal sponsor of the team is the NZL Yachting Trust. Supporting sponsors include NZAS, ASB Bank and Line 7.

Yngling crew named in YNZ Olympic Squad
Sharon Ferris and crew Raynor Smeal and Shandy Buckley have been added to the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad after recently placing sixth at the ISAF Sailing World Championships - well inside the top ten benchmark.
Inclusion is based on performance and means that the Yngling crew will receive extra support as well as improving their chances of representing New Zealand at next years Olympic Games. The result in Portugal qualified New Zealand for a place in the Yngling class in which fifteen boats will sail, however nomination for the New Zealand Olympic team will require more similar results at up-coming international regattas.
“We are currently working out what our next step from here is,” said Raynor Smeal. “We need to now prove to the Selectors we deserve to go to the Olympics in the spot we have just earned. Being the only team competing for the spot we need to stay in the top echelon of the world so we are in with a chance of winning a medal.”
The total classes represented in the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad are now eight. The final decision on who will represent New Zealand at next year’s Olympic Games in China will be made by selectors in coming months.

Club Scene: Winter chill doesn’t stop racing at Waikawa…
Despite freezing temperatures and teeming rain members of the Waikawa Boating Club are regularly racing their boats during the winter. Sunday’s overcast sky, drizzle and little wind was no deterrent to more than seventy local sailors on nineteen boats competing in Race 2 of the Vero Insurance Winter Series. The mixed fleet of cruising and racing boats saw some unusually close racing as tide and fickle winds combined to have more effect on position than boat speed.
No boats finished within the five hour time limit. Frustrating for Jonathon Duffy’s ‘Stealth’ which was leading and only 50 metres from the line when time was called.
Ice and bitter cold had its effect on the Tuesday Tossers race. Only two boats made it out for the twilight race round Waikawa and Whatamanga Bays. Grahame Henry’s ‘Odin’ and Mike Vining’s ‘Hotspur’ made the most of the clear night, bright moonlight, and gentle breeze before retiring to thaw out in the Club House. Racing will continue next week and the club has a policy of welcoming any guests keen to see for themselves the delights of winter sailing.
Food has been high on the activity list for the club this winter. 50 people turned out for a Game Pie and Dark Beers Tasting night and on the coldest night of the year in the teeth of a brisk southerly the club had a successful, if somewhat chilly, BBQ.
The temperature rose with the warmth of Greece on Saturday when Carl and Lesley Hintz were guest chefs for the evening. In a hugely popular activity Club volunteers are invited to cook and share their favourite recipes at an evening meal. Carl and Lesley’s cooking skills and choice of Greek food provided yet another sell-out event for the club.

Kiwis competing around the world…
OK DINGHY WORLDS
Leba, Poland is the venue for the 2007 OK Dinghy World Championships. As usual, the Kiwis have sent a very strong team of nine sailors including 2006 national champion Mark Perrow, 2007 national champion Paul Rhodes, Karl Purdie and 2006 Interdominion champion Steve McDowell.
Racing was scheduled to start on 23 July although there was no sailing on day one as strong winds lashed the Polish coast and subsequently day two was cancelled due to light fickle winds.
The schedule is now becoming tight and three races per day are planned on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Five races are needed to make a series. The worry is that the forecast is for 30 knots on Wednesday, but the sailors are determined to go sailing come what may.

Successful Wellington Judges Seminar
A very pleasing number of participants attended the Judges seminar at the Plimmerton Yacht Club on the 14/15 of July. All were very positive and seemed to have the desire to become qualified. It was good to see experienced officials Steve Macris and Pat Millar at the seminar. They added a great deal to the discussion with their extensive experience in Race Management and Judging.
The Wellington Yachting Association has a very positive attitude to the development of Race Officials and that along with a significant interest from RPNYC would seem to have set the region on a very productive Officials development pathway.
Thanks to Mike Coupe and the Wellington Yachting Association who funded the seminar and to the Plimmerton Yacht Club for hosting it.

The Coach course is aimed at people who are coaching sailors through to regional and national regattas. These courses will be the new YNZ Syllabus, so they’re a must for any coach and a great chance for already qualified people to renew their qualification.
The Auckland and Wellington areas have managed to secure funding so courses in those areas will be free. There is no better time than now to learn new skills and help your sailors. Register your interest so you don't miss out.
