Flying Dutchman Worlds in Spain

Fleet racing 2006 Flying Dutchman Worlds Char Doyle
The Flying Dutchman class, which was the two-man Olympic dinghy from 1960 to 1992, are holding their 2007 World Championship in Spain at Mar Menor. The class, which was taken up enthusiastically in the UK after its choice as an Olympic class, still attracts large fleets, especially within Europe.

Although the idea of a 20ft trapeze dinghy went against the norm for dinghy sailing in the UK at that period, when 12 to 16ft dinghies were enjoying a boom, especially home built ones. British crews sailing in the class in the sixties lead a breakthrough in Olympic sailing success.

Keith Musto and Tony Morgan won Silver at the Enoshima Games in 1964 and during a time of huge growth in dinghy racing in the UK, most class champions tried their hand at competing in the class as each Olympic Games approached - full time dinghy sailing was then almost unknown except for the soviet block countries.

In those much more laid-back days, top competitors would move into the class in the year preceding the Games and challenge the small group of regular FD sailors. And with a Bob Hoare built hull becoming almost obligatory, the triumphant of Musto/Morgan, Oakley/Hunt and multi-medallist (2 Gold and 1 Silver) Rodney Pattison with various crew, ruled the major events thro the sixties and seventies.

Jo Richards and Peter Allem won Britain's final Olympic medal in the class, a Bronze, at the Long Beach Games in 1984. The class was omitted from the Olympics after Barcelona in 1992.

After the replacement of the FD in the Olympics, the class suffered a to be expected downturn in new building, but always a popular boat on the continent, especially on the large lakes, the class maintained numbers and has gradually rebuilt to become a popular international racing class again.

International events are well supported and 77 boats from 16 countries will be racing at the 2007 Worlds in Spain. The British class is well represented with ten entries . . . . .
