Long Beach Yacht Club is once again hosting the biennial Long Beach to Cabo San Lucas Yacht Race November 2–9. The event was last held in 1995 and was a biennial favorite for nearly 20 years.
Commitments to race have already been received from Doug Baker’s maxi-sled, Magnitude 80; Mike Campbell’s and Dale Williams’ Kernan 68, Peligroso; Peter Tong’s Santa Cruz 70 turbo-sled, OEX; Bill Durant’s and Rick Brizendine’s Santa Cruz 52, Relentless, and Dave Voss’ brand new Farr 40, Piranha.
'Recent times have seen a resurgence of interest in racing to Mexican ports,' race chairman David Stotler said, 'and the 800 nautical mile Cabo race course was a regular event for LBYC.'
The LBYC race to the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico dates back to 1965 when then-Rear Commodore Bill Dalessi organized the first Long Beach to La Paz race.
Dalessi also obtained permission and a deed of gift from President Lyndon B. Johnson establishing the President of the United States of America Trophy which was (and will be again) awarded to the first boat to finish.
In 1977 the race destination was changed to Cabo San Lucas so competitors wouldn’t have to make the long northward leg back up to La Paz.
A change this year is the finish at Cabo Falso located at the western end of Cabo San Lucas, which sits at the southernmost tip of Baja. This will eliminate the dreaded light winds in the final run to the finish line.
Participants will enjoy a sendoff party at LBYC the evening before the race, as well as a post-race party in Cabo San Lucas.
'Cold cerveza and warm Mexican sunsets await those who make the trek,' said Stotler.
