Register now for Commodores Conference

Club Commodores are invited to attend our inaugural Commodores Conference to be held Saturday 4th August 2007, at the Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre in Auckland.

This is an excellent opportunity for each Commodore to put forward the thinking of your club, and to raise any concerns you may have as to the future of our sport. The wealth of knowledge and ideas that you have and can share with your colleagues can assist the development of yachting in New Zealand.

Flight subsidies based on super saver fares are available for Club Commodores in the lower North Island and South Island. Book now and the cost of your flights could be covered - more details are on the website.

Petrol vouchers are available to Commodores travelling from regions within reasonable driving distance of Auckland.

A registration form is coming to each Club in the post, and also available on the YNZ website, through the link below.

Evans and Burling join YNZ Olympic Squad

Yachting New Zealand announces that Carl Evans and Peter Burling will join the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad, increasing the likelihood that the pair of 16 year olds could represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games 2008.

Evans of Auckland and Burling of Tauranga earned entry into the YNZ Olympic Squad after placing sixth at the 470 European Championships just sailed in Thessaloniki, Greece. Yachting New Zealand’s Olympic Squad is reviewed annually and inclusion is based on performance at key international events.

“Carl and Peter's result at the Europeans is amazing,” says Leslie Egnot, Olympic Operations Manager.

“For such a young combination in their international 470 debut to finish 6th in a star studded fleet including previous world champions and Olympic medallists is fantastic. They both obviously have the talent to take them to great heights and I look forward to watching their progress.”

NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team News

Yachting New Zealand’s High Performance and Youth Director, Marty Watson updates us on the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team…

With just under 30 days to go before the “big event” the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team is set on achieving success at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Kingston, Canada. Team members are continuing to train hard, and despite the onslaught of winter, are averaging between 9 & 13 hours of on water training each week.

The double-handed program has been in good hands over recent months with coaching support coming from a number past champions in the 29er class chipping in to lend a hand. Coaches Geoff Woolley & Brad Thom have been impressed with the rate of improvement in these sailors over this period.

Double-handed Girls representatives, Sarah & Emma Berry, have shown a huge commitment to the campaign and have traveled from Wellington to Auckland most weekends to train with their Auckland based team mates. For Sarah & Emma Berry this will be their 2nd ISAF Youth Worlds, having represented New Zealand last year in Weymouth (GBR). Last year Sarah claimed the accolade as the youngest sailor at the event.

After an intensive introduction to the 29er class by international skiff sailing coach “Bunny” Warren, the double-handed boys team, Paul Snow-Hansen & Blair Tuke, have gone from strength to strength also. Both teams will attend the North American 29er Championships on route to Kingston (CAN).

With the efforts of Hobie Class association stalwarts and a committed approach from the parents and sailors alike, New Zealand’s Hobie 16 representatives, Tim Coltman & Ben Goodwin, have come a long way in a short time also. While they would be first to say they still have much to learn, they were delighted with the results of last weekend’s Takapuna Boating Club’s Closing Regatta. The opportunity to race against other Hobie 16’s was invaluable and thanks must go to the Hobie 16 sailors for their support and making the effort to attend this regatta.

In Wellington, the single-handed division entrants have been training hard with satellite coach, Elliot Cree. Training sessions for Cushla Hume– Merry & Josh Junior often end in the dark, as there is now very limited daylight after school for training in Wellington. Both sailors have been selected to attend the ISAF World Sailing Championships in Cascais (POR) and will depart for this event from the 22nd of June where they will continue there final preparation for the ISAF Youth Sailing Worlds in Canada.

Our windsurfer girl’s representative, Justina Sellers will also attend the ISAF Sailing World Championships prior to traveling to the Youth Worlds. This weekend, Justina was elected as the Captain to the team. This will be Justina’s second ISAF Youth Worlds and of course she has her sights set on achieving at this event.

Josh Nixon; the boys RSX representative has continued a stringent training régime and trains regularly with Justina and a number of other YNZ High Performance Academy Squad Members.

The team traveled to Lake Taupo this past weekend to train in the fresh water together, as well as go over some of the final preparations of the team’s campaign for the ISAF Youth Worlds. With a back drop of snow capped mountains, team leaders Matt McCormick & Sara Winther put the sailors through there paces in the fresh waters of the lake.

The team officially arrives in Canada on the 11th of July from their various pre-events. Reports will be available on the Yachting New Zealand website.

Ride Your Own Whale!

During a recent training session on Wellington harbor. NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team Member, Cushla Hume-Merry and team coach Sara Winther were delighted to come across a Southern Right Whale. The Whale which was playing in the waters off Worser Bay had also caught the attention of a TV news crew which had been ferried to the scene by a local police boat.

After putting on a show for a while, the whale decided to move on, and with that the girls opted to get stuck back into training. The Police boat & film crew also decided to get on with their day.

After about ten minutes of sailing Cushla, (with Sara watching from a distance in the coach boat), felt a “little bump”. Instinctively, thinking she may have run aground she glanced over the side to see what she had bumped into. It was then she noticed the shadowy silhouette of the 40 foot whale now swimming along directly underneath her little Laser.

With a squeal she began easing the sail and looking over the side with joy and disbelief. As she did, the whale began arching its back in preparation to dive, and with that its massive tail came out of the water in a smooth and gentle motion, brushing one of its flukes hard against the underside of Cush’s boom.

As she compensated for the load, the tail brushed free of the boom putting Cushla off balance, sending the boat into broach and consequent near capsize. In disbelief she looked over at the coach who had seen the whole thing from the coach boat, staring back at her in shock and amazement.

Certainly a training session neither of the girls will forget for a long time.

RS:X Europeans Heat Up

With two days remaining at the RS:X European Champs things are heating up for the two kiwis competing. Both Barbara Kendall and Jon-Paul Tobin are on form to make the medal race to be sailed on Thursday in Cyprus.

Kendall is lying 3rd overall after day four of the event slipping one place overnight. Conditions for racing in Cyprus were light and frustrating for the women’s fleet which endured multiple postponements. Kendall was one of eight black flagged in the one race sailed, and this becomes her discard race.

Marina Alabau of Spain has the lead with a 12 point margin over current world champion Allessandra Sensini who has climbed into 2nd place. Kendall is now three points further back.

In the men’s division racing is now split into gold and silver fleets and two races were sailed last night. Tobin who was lying 4th had his poorest performance of the regatta to date placing 20th and then 13th. He now holds 7th place overall.

Officials Log Book

Due to popular demand we have reprinted the Official’s Logbook.

Its purpose is to allow Race Officials to record events where they have participated, their role, and some measure of the level of the event. The information can then be used to establish a qualification or to support a renewal of an existing qualification.

These logbooks will be distributed to each participant at Race Management, Judge or Umpire Seminars. As we have been out of stock for some time there may be qualified Race Officials who missed out on getting one. Send us your stories

At Yachting New Zealand we often hear that you would like to read more grass roots yachting stories in Briefings. We think that’s a great idea.

It might be a new initiative at your Club that’s going really well. You might want to tell everyone about a phenomenal volunteer who puts in the hours at your Club. If you have a story of general national interest then send it to us.

Three to four short but well written paragraphs is what we’re after. Email them to jodie@yachtingnz.org.nz
