The Singapore Laser Trophy and Singapore National 420 Championships concluded on Sunday 10th June after four days of racing off the National Sailing Centre. Light winds dominated the week with wind conditions hovering between to six to 10 knots.

Participation from South-East Asian countries has boosted the attendance rate of the Laser and 420 fleet. Entries included sailors from Myanmar, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia. These sailors take this regatta as part of their preparations for the upcoming Thailand SEA Games in December.

For the Singapore sailors, the 420 Nationals serve as one of the nomination events for the 2007 SEA Games. The top two male and female pairs, Justin Liu/Sherman Cheng, Timothy Seet/Terry Tang, Jovina Choo/Sara Tan and Priscilla Low/Cecilia Low, will next compete in the 420 Junior Europeans Championships to vie for the two 420 spots for the SEA Games.

It was a tight battle between Victoria Junior College’s Alexi Lim/Kyne Chan and Low Zhaohong/Andrea Dragon in the 420 non-spinnaker division, however Alexi Lim/Kyne Chan proved their mettle and conquered with seven bullets to emerge winner. Malaysian sailor Mohd Romzi dominated the Laser Standard division and scored 13 points to clinch the Laser Trophy. Fellow Malaysian Nik Ashraf Qaedi came in second with eight points behind. Singapore’s Quek Zhen Hao is in third place with 25 points.

Sixteen year old Victoria Chan, reigning Laser 4.7 World Champion, outclassed the competition to take top spot in the Laser Radial fleet. Elizabeth Yin, 2006 Byte World Female Champion, showed good promise in second position. In third position is Malaysia’s Harrithammry Nassution bin Hairudin with 29 points.
