Two bullets for Jelik at 2007 Koh Samui Regatta

by Rob Kothe on 28 May 2007
Jelik - Frank Pong’s Reichel Pugh 76 Sail-World.com /AUS http://www.sail-world.com
A first up double, line honours and a handicap win for Frank Pong's 76 foot maxi Jelik on Day One, Race One in the 2007 Koh Samui Regatta, in the Gulf of Thaliand. Hot and humid with threatening thunderstorms, but light winds for the first race.

THe early morning breeze allowed PRO Tony Denham to choose the 26nm Course 5 for all classes.

At the combined IRC start a loud bang was heard when Keith Dunn’s LunchCutter II came in into contact with Dick Sander’s Thairaver. One sailor was hospitalised and the severe damage to LunchCutter II forced them to retire. A protest was lodged.

In the Grand Prix racing division, Jelik sailed away from the fleet beating Nick Burn's Mandrake across the line by 20 minutes and she beat Bill Bremmer's Sydney 40 Foxy Lady III by three and a half minutes on corrected time.

In the IRC Division, David Lindhal's Swan 42 La Samudra sailed above her waterline length and weight to record a 91 second win on corrected time from Chris Mead's Halcyon Daze with Ben Copley's Beneteau 40.7 Asia Spirit third.

For the first time at Koh Samui, there was a Firefly 850 Sports Catamaran Divison, the Raimon Land Firefly One Design Trophy. Henry Kaye's brightly coloured Mamba won line honours by just 38 seconds from David Hill's Voodoo Child, with class designer Mark Prescott on the helm, with Roger Kingdon's Motor Inzi third.

The Firefly has been designed and built in Phuket.

In the mixed fleet Multihulls, Voodoo Child had a handicap advantage over the other Firefly's. She scored a win ahead of Radab Kanjanavanit's trimaran Cedar Swan with Moto Inzi third.

Yachts are moored along the front of the beach, and sailors joined this afternoon's drinks at the Regatta Beach Tavern followed by a party at Dhevatura Residence, Bophut Beach.

Four yachts Jelik, Hi Fi, Foxy Lady III, Mandrake, LunchCutter II and Ffree Fire 52 will be competing for the Koh Samui Regatta Trophy and the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Circuit Trophy.

Koh Samui Regatta is organised under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT) and is recognised by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
