The United Internet Team Germany did not manage a win after an exciting and fierce race in Round Robin I of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
On the last downwind leg the Italian +39 Challenge passed Germany I and finally won the race. The United Internet Team Germany finishes Round Robin I on rank ten.
'Of course we are disappointed. We did not reach our target for Round Robin I. We will have to improve in Round Robin II otherwise it will be very difficult to reach our target for the whole Louis Vuitton Cup', says Head of Syndicate Michael Scheeren.
Skipper Jesper Bank was also very disappointed at the end of the race day. 'We have raced two opponents we are equal with. We had the lead in both races for a long time; however our opponents took advantage of the wind shifts which we couldn’t use. Yet we proved that we are close to our opponents and we are looking forward to Round Robin 2', he said after the race against Areva Challenge and +39 Challenge.
The German Team was leading up to the second mark in the race against Areva Challenge. On the second cross Areva Challenge could gain ground due to a wind shift and then took the lead. To the finish line the lead extended to 69 seconds.
The match race against +39 Challenge was a close head-to-head race and Germany I was always leading. Conditions with light and shifting winds were also responsible for the gap between the two boats. However on the last downwind leg +39 Challenge was able to use the pressure from the left a little more and then went over the line 57 seconds ahead of the German team.
The German team now finishes Round Robin I on rank ten. On Saturday there will still be races of Round Robin I carried out which could not be started due to weak winds. The United Internet Team Germany has finished all races and will therefore have a day off tomorrow. The next match race for the German team will be the first race of Round Robin II against BMW Oracle Racing from the US on Sunday.
