Southland crews made a solid start to the New Zealand secondary schools rowing championships at Lake Karapiro in the past two days.
James Hargest's Jessica van der Lem and Jamie Pannett prevailed in a nail-biting finish in their under-18 doubles heat to advance to the semi-final stage of the regatta.
van Der Lem also advanced in her under-17 singles event.
Their schoolmates Hayden Cohen and Dillion Redpath won their heat in the under-16 doubles to make the semi-finals.
Cohen also has a semi-final berth in the under-17 singles scull.
