Cameron Miles is Top Hog in NSW Hogs Breath Café Sydney 38 NSW Titles
by Rob Kothe on 22 Jul 2001
Former World Etchells Champion helmsman Cameron Miles and his experienced crew overwhelmed the competition in the 10 race series in the Teamsail and Hogs Breath Café sponsored series run in Pittwater and Sydney Harbour in April and July.
With aggressive starts, an unmatched tactical sense and the smartest crew work the Rush team finished the series with an impressively consistent record. 1,1,4,3,3,3,1,4,1,9
The 9 came in the last race with the Rush team missing a huge shift on the starlike. Half way up the first beat Rush was last boat in the fleet by ten boat lengths. They fought their way past No Options, Swish and Obsession who all had spinnaker problems but Rush recorded a ninth to close out the regatta.
Blowfly's Barry Moore took second place in the series from Vaughan Stibbard's The Business.
The Sydney 38 fleet over the four-day regatta contains many young sailors including those from the CYCA Youth Academy. After today racing, a group of them commented 'It's great to have sailors like Cameron Miles, and John Savage and a bunch of other World Class sailors in the Sydney 38 fleets in Sydney, Melbourne and all around.
The Class is shaping as a great learning place for the younger offshore sailors. The benefit of the One Design fleet is that we all learn heaps from watching senior sailors on identical offshore boats to ours. We can follow their approach to sailing and they are all generous of their time in helping us progress in the Class. We can't wait to sail in the Hogs Breath Nationals in Airlie Beach and in the IRC Class at Hammo.'
The sentiment expressed by the group today is likely to be further fulfilled as new owners join the fleet with experienced campaigners like John Winning, John Messenger, Hugo Van Kretschmar and Nigel Holman joining in the One Design racing over the coming months. The competition in the Sydney 38 One Design class can only get hotter and the transfer of skills within the class will be invaluable.
