Quarter finals on Match Point

Hansen and Richard, Quarter Finals, Match 2 start - 2006 Monsoon Cup Sail-World.com /AUS http://www.sail-world.com
Three Monsoon Cup quarter finals are on match point with Ian Williams, Peter Holmberg, Peter Gilmour all up 2-0. Richard is tussling with Hansen 2-2.

Williams, cleared out and was never headed in Match 1 against Col. In Match 2 however, Williams made an error and was over the line early, but to his relief so did his opponent. Williams then found the advantage up the right side of the course, rounding the marks first, and went on to again beat Col.

Holmberg beat Bank in their first encounter. In the Holmberg versus Bank second match, Holmberg took the advantage at the start when he squeezed Bank at the committee boat end of the line and was never headed and took the gun easily.

Defending Champion Gilmour and Cian hit the start line close together, but split tacks with Gilmour trailing for most of the race. The 'magic eye' camera showed Gilmour trailing at the last mark rounding, however on the homeward exciting spinnaker run, Gilmour managed to close the gap and to sneak over the line, ahead of Cian. Gilmour had taken the first match, by a much larger margin and this win took him through to the semi finals.

Hansen and Richard fought hard at the pre-start and hit the start line together in their first match. Hansen took the race and Match 2 saw a similar situation, close tussling pre-start and nothing separating them at the gun. Richard reversed the situation crossing ahead of his rival.

A mega tussle ensued, as both skipper fought for a place in the semis. Both have won additional matches and the score stands at 2 all.
