2001 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships - Day 4
by Event Media on 8 Jul 2001
With the wind coming earlier today, all fleets were off the water by 5.45pm - much earlier than on previous days.
Singapore are leading the 420 boys, Australia the 420 girls, Poland the Mistral girls, Netherlands the Mistral boys,
France the Hobie 16 Open, New Zealand the Laser girls and Canada - host to the next Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF
World Championship in July 2002 - lead the Laser boys.
Melissa Bryant and Martha Leonard (AUS) still lead the 420 girls and were happier with their performance today. 'We
were more consistent than yesterday. It’s good to be consistent in our fleet as everyone else isn’t, it’s a real
advantage,' said Melissa who have an eleven point lead over second placed Argentina.
Singapores’ Junhao Tay and Dahui Ou lead the boys 420 fleet. They were by far the most consistent pairing with a
1,2,1 score-line.
New Zealand’s Kate O’Brien is dominating the Laser girls fleet and looks set to take the Gold medal on Tuesday. 'I
didn’t expect to be doing so well,' said Kate. 'I’ve definitely got a lot of speed, but I’m also getting good starts and
sailing smart, but I think my speed is the key,' she explained.
Pre-regatta favourites Romain Motteau and Francois Morvan from France now lead the Hobie 16 fleet, after scoring
two first places. Guatemala drop from first to fourth overall. Robbie Lovig from Australia knows the competition is hot
here in the Hobie class. 'I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw a lot of these people competing at the Olympics in 2008.'
A change in wind conditions did not alter the leaders in the two Mistral fleets. Joeri Van Dijk from the Netherlands
scored three second places to be three points clear of second placed Bryon Kokalanis from Greece. Even though
Poland’s Zofia Kelpacka is the lightest in the girl’s fleet, she maintained her lead in the windier conditions, and is four
points ahead of France’s Marion Defay.
Tomorrow is the Lay Day. Racing resumes at Midday on Monday 9th July when three races are scheduled.
