From its debut at the 2006 Sydney International Boat Show, the 36CR has already generated great excitement here in Australia, in the US and in Japan.
In what must be one of the most successful new yacht design launches into the Australian market in recent times, the Sydney 36CR has recorded sales of an extraordinary 11, yes eleven yachts to date since its August launch.
Now its proving its speed on the race track.
On Saturday afternoon CYCA sailor Denis Cooper proved that sailing his new Sydney 36CR Amante to a resounding win in the prestigious Gascoigne Cup, part of the CYCA Short Ocean Pointscore series, in 20-25 knot winds off Sydney Heads.
No slouches in the fleet behind her on PHS handicap, she won from Stephen Ainsworth's Reichel Pugh 60 Loki, Julian Farren-Price Cookson 39 About Time and Steven David's Wild Joe, AKA as Wild Oats IX, the Admirals Cup winner.
Cooper sailed his earlier IMS Sydney 36 hard, but this was certainly his best win.
Dockside he was all smiles today. 'This was just her second outing. We sailed through some well known boats. This is a beautiful design, fast upwind and downwind and easy to sail shorthanded.'
You can expect to see much more of Amante, with the 2007 program including the Pittwater to Coffs race, the Sydney to Southport race, Sydney Mooloolaba and Hamilton Island Race Week.
The key to this new design is the stiffness of the hull structure and a keel that weighs more than a Sydney 38, hence offering the highest righting moment of any production yacht in this size bracket.
This yacht appeals to a wide range of sailors with a common desire to make sailing easier, yet still maintaining the outstanding performance for which Sydney Yachts are renowned.
The combination between the simplicity of a non overlapping headsail rig and an asymmetric spinnaker option promotes the desire for a yacht that is easy to manage, yet exciting to sail.
Michael Delaney, owner of Eye Appeal, is excited with his new yacht. ‘I chose the Sydney 36CR after looking at all existing and new options in the market place and decided the Sydney 36CR would be the most suited to my plans for club racing and also cruising with my boat partner. The boat is called Eye Appeal as I am an eye surgeon and he is a lawyer,’
Delaney continued ‘Having already owned a Sydney 38 and having had such a great experience with watching the yacht being built, it is great to have another Australian yacht.’
In addition to these key features, the interior has been warmly received by those who have stepped on board. Fresh and spacious, styled similarly to a high quality apartment, the interior appears modern and clean rather than following the old styled timber design that many other yachts offer.
Full head liners and grooved hull liners are just two of the many quality finishes found on board this cruiser racer.
Last and not to be ignored, the price of this new yacht means that you do not have to pay a premium for an Australian made yacht.
'Dollar for dollar this yacht more than matches the European alternatives with the Sydney 36CR also able to offer far greater performance and much higher construction standards.
We sold six yachts sold off the plan, double that of the successful Sydney 38OD’s from their conception and we can already see this is going to be a significant model in very successful CR range, along with the 47CR and 39CR.' said Martin Thompson of Sydney Yachts.
Complete with antifoul, commissioning and delivery at the competitive price of $259,000 or $272,000 sail away, it is little wonder why this is the yacht is proving very popular for new buyers in this size range.
