Editorial- World Champions need Sponsors!

by nzeditor@sail-world.com on 9 Oct 2006
Welcome to the Welcome to the Monday edition of Sail-World.com/nz

After the events of the weekend, it has been a slow day today, however we have managed to obtain some images courtesy of Erik Simonson from www.h2oshots.com of the scenes in San Francisco after Carl Williams and Hamish Pepper’s win in the Star World Championships on Saturday.

Sail-World interviewed Hamish today, and we’ll have the story up Tuesday or Wednesday.

He gives some very good insights into their campaign, and says they are really just scratching the surface at present.

It is remarkable to think that he and Carl have achieved what they have having spent just 35 days together in the boat.

They are now on a serious hunt for sponsorship to continue their campaign through 2007 and 2008. So far Pepper and Williams have received good help from Line 7 and Harken.

They have the North American’s coming up, and then Carl will re-join the BMW Oracle Racing Team for the 2007 America’s Cup. Hamish’s very tentative plan is to continue sailing with David Giles, the 1996 Bronze medalist in the Star, at Savannah. This combination will continue to sail with Andrew Estcourt as their coach. Carl Williams will re-join the crew as soon as his America’s Cup obligations are finished.

Conditions at San Francisco, seemed to be very similar to Qingdao – with light winds and strong currents, conditions Pepper said they enjoy sailing in, and relish the challenge.

The costs of campaigning a Star at this level are substantial with probably over $200,000 being spent to date and with a new boat, on order for delivery at the end of the year, costing 60,000 Euro.

Their World Championship boat is 2004 vintage, nine kg overweight, and required a substantial refit before they could being serious campaigning. It also lacked one of the new milled keels, used by most of the other top competitors, and which have a better shape offering less drag.

Can you help?

So look out for the interview with Hamish Pepper, which will be up first on www.sail-word.com/nz

Good sailing!

Some thoughts on provisioning for distance sailing
A new perspective on provisioning and time spent at sea One of the great joys of distance racing unfurls the moment that the dock lines are untied. Suddenly, the myriad packing lists that inevitably define most trip-planning efforts become about as relevant as a tax return from eight years ago.
