For many years there has been a search underway in New Zealand to find an entry level two-handed yacht.
In the 1960's there were a couple of good options - particularly with the Flying Ant. However 40 years on, the current options all involve imported boats and cost is a big impediment to people who want to buy a first boat for the cost of a bike.
A group out of the Glendowie Boating Club, including leading designer Des Townson, have put their heads together and found a new use for the old Starling hulls that are available on the second-hand market.
The variation to the Townson design was launched on Sunday 17 September.
A Starlet is a Starling hull with a rig suitable for two ten year olds.
It has a shorter mast, same sail area, recycled old hull and all sail controls are at the mast.
The layout is simple, costs are low - North's jib $250, Starling main recut $250, and $200 of new hardware equates to a useful and inexpensive training yacht for kids that prefer to learn sailing with a friend.
By all reports the Starlet went well and appeared to sail nicely. The kids came enthusiastic with big smiles.
One of the driving forces behind the project, Brian Peet explains 'I think it is important not to lose sight of the target market.
'We are after a combined crew weight of around 65-70 kg so it is important not to sink the boat with kids who are too big. Maybe a 12 year old and an 8 year old would be the ideal combo.'
