GBR and NED take the World 470 titles in China

by ISAF on 13 Sep 2006
New 470 World Champions Nic Asher and Elliot Willis, competing at Miami OCR Rolex / Dan Nerney
Nic ASHER and Elliot WILLIS (GBR) and Marcelien DE KONING and Lobke BERKHOUT (NED) have won the ISAF Grade W 470 World Championships in Rizhao, China. The two crews kept their cool in the Medal Races today to lift the World title.

147 teams from 33 countries all over the world, featuring Olympic medallists, reigning and former World and European Champions, contested the 2006 Worlds as the race for Beijing 2008 heats up.

The Medal Races
ASHER and WILLIS went into the Medal Race one point behind 2004 and 2005 World Champions Nathan WILMOT and Malcolm PAGE (AUS), but were able to get the better of the Aussies in the all important finale. (Wilmot and Page, continued to pump on the last down-windg leg, as had been allowed on the first run and later protested protested the race committee. While the Jury admitted having raced race organisers to use a Horn instead of a whistle to signal the change in pumping, organisers claimed there were no such horns in China)

The British team posted a fourth place, whilst WILMOT and PAGE came in eighth to see the World title slip through their fingers. Gideon KLIGER and Udi GAL (ISR) took third place overall after coming in fifth in the Medal Race, one place ahead of their closest challengers for bronze, Sime FANTELA and Igor MARENIC (CRO). The Medal Race was won by Nicholas CHARBONNIER and Olivier BAUSSET (FRA), pushing them up to seventh place overall.

In the Women’s Medal Race, DE KONING and BERKHOUT held a five point lead over Ai KONDO and Naoko KAMATA (JPN) and sailed into fourth place, one behind the Japanese crew, to secure their second consecutive World title. Olympic bronze medallists and recent winners of the Olympic Test Event in Qingdao, Therese THORGERSSON and Vendela ZACHRISSON (SWE), came third overall after another strong Medal Race performance. Yuka YOSHISAKO and Noriko OKYMA (JPN) endured a tough Medal Race, finishing in tenth and last place. After being in the top three every day of the regatta, they drop down to fifth place overall.

Leading Up To The Medal Races
Two races were completed yesterday to finalize the qualification for the men’s and women’s Medal Race. In the men’s fleet, WILMOT and PAGE and ASHER and WILLIS set up a Medal Race showdown, while both KLIGER and GAL and FANTELA and MARENIC were still in the race for the World Championship title. In the women’s fleet, DE KONING and BERKHOUT faced double competition from Japan in the shape of KONDO and KAMATA, and YOSHISAKO and OKYMA.

Racing started yesterday at 1200 in light winds of five to eight knots average coming from sea. The breeze was steady, however complex conditions were created by the combination of a choppy sea, breeze occasionally doubling from four to eight knots and currents changing direction and strength.

Australia And Britain Prosper
WILMOT and PAGE and ASHER and WILLIS both increased their number of points by 13 yesterday as a sum of gained scores during races eleven and twelve. This left Monday’s situation of only one point difference between the pair going into the Medal Race.

Sven COSTER and Kalle COSTER (NED), in a third overall position after race ten, had a terrible day and dropped hard to seventh after 18,25 scores. 2005 Junior World Champions FANTELA and MARENIC scored a more secure set of results, as did KLIGER and GAL.

After a terrific European Championship where they took four of the top five places, the French teams have failed to make an impact at the top of the leaderboard in Rizhao. However yesterday both Benjamin BONNAUD and Romain BONNAUD (FRA) and CHARBONNIER and BAUSSET did enough to at least secure themselves a place in the Medal Race.

Races were exciting yesterday. The leaders chose for secure defensive sailing, with an intense battle on the course where sailors had to give and take.

'Important for the sailors today was to take the most favourable side of the course at the start, and to have the ability to switch strategy depending on the prevalence of wind or current during the race,' said Dutch coach Dick COSTER

Women’s Battle
DE KONING and BERKHOUT fought back from a difficult Monday with a terrific display yesterday to give them pole position going into the Medal Race. A third and a fifth from the Dutch girls put them five points ahead of KONDO and KAMATA, who themselves battled back well from a 24th in race eleven with a third place in race twelve.

YOSHISAKO and OKYMA were the opening leaders of the event and up until the Medal Race today, they had managed to stay within the top three overall every day of the regatta.

European Champions Stefanie ROTHWEILER and Vivien KUSSATZ (GER) had a great day yesterday, with 8,1 scores helping them squeeze into the Medal Race.
