BBC to broadcast Qingdao Olympic Sailing - Sunday

by RYA on 3 Sep 2006
Close finish in the 49er and another Gold medal for Britain Sailing2008.com

BBC Grandstand had exclusive access to the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre and to Skandia Team GBR – the British sailing team in training for the Beijing and London Olympics – in the build-up to their dramatic medal race day at the 2006 Olympic Test Event on Wednesday.

APP Broadcast sent camera teams afloat in drifting matches and in 25-knot blasts as the Chinese Olympic venue delivered the full and challenging range of conditions, and on medal race day the cameras were with all of the British medallists as the record eight medal haul came home.

But the programme is much more than a blow-by-blow account of a sensational sailing performance: Olympic Laser sailor Paul Goodison qualified early for the final and the cameras followed him into the heart of Chinese urban culture where he talks about the life of a solo Laser sailor.

Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy set off down one of the most famous streets in the city – Nanjing Road – to talk about their experiences as the ‘old guard’ in the team, and the cameras followed Sarah Ayton and her team, and Helena Lucas and her team, as they bussed down to the dock for a final race Yngling showdown.

The 20-minute BBC Grandstand feature – which starts at 1335 on BBC 2 on Sunday 3 September – combines the best in the sport of sailing with a unique insight into some of the sailors, the venue and the country that will play host to the Olympic Games in two years’ time.

Ahead of the main programme, you can download a Skandia Team GBR Pre-Olympics podcast, which gives a taster of all the action in the build up to the final medal races.

The podcast will be available from 12:00 on Saturday 2 September.
