The Portuguese website covering the joint 420 and 470 Junior European Championships in Tavira have filed these reports on the first three day's racing.

Day 3 Report:

The Portuguese fleet, competing on the 420 and 470 junior European ongoing Championships, has proven to be in excellent shape in this year’s qualifying series. In fact, seven 420 class and three 470 class crews made it to the Gold Fleet. António Matos Rosa/Francisco Lacerda, 5th in the overall 420’s, and Tomás Silva/Ricardo Schedel, 10th in the overall 470’s, are the best ranking Portuguese, with chances of winning a title. Nevertheless, world renowned sports sailors head their classes.

On the 420 class, all prized places have, so far, been fiercely disputed. Among the first 30, five Portuguese teams are listed. António Matos Rosa and Francisco Lacerda have already won 3 out of 6 regattas during this championship, placing them in fifth in the overall score.

Bernardo Freitas and Manuel Arriaga ended the day in 11th followed by Miguel Mamede and Tomás Almeida in the 18th position. The national athletes have only been surpassed by 6 British crews.

The New Zealander World Champions Carl Evans and Peter Burling are heading the competition, whereas the British Hanna Mills and Peggy Webster, current World and Europe 420 Champions, finished in 7th.

Considering that this is a European Championship, the New Zealanders, in open competition, rightfully loose their first place to the Israelite team, Amit Brokman and Moshe Appel.

On the 470 class, well challenged first places can be referred since only 15 points part the 1st form the 10th in the overall score.

Both 2nd and 9th places were unexpectedly won by Russia and Byelorussia, respectively. Such remarkable overall scores are not usual for these countries in 470.

As for the Portuguese team, Tomás Silva and Ricardo Schedal, they have been competing at a steady level, with good chances of winning a medal.

Piedade Colaço and Mariana Lobato did not make the Gold Fleet. Only Swiss, German and Turkish Ladies Teams have conquered this highlight. Colaço states: 'We’ve only been sailing the 470 for three months and therefore we came mostly to learn and try to end the championship in the first half of the score charts. However, due to the strong winds, it will be hard to pull'.

Day 2 Report:

On the second day of sail racing, the first places were fiercely fought. Winds of 24/25 knots and rough sea made it hard for the competitors.

On the second day of sail racing, the first places were fiercely fought. Winds of 24/25 knots and rough sea made it hard for the competitors.

The 470 World Vice-Champions Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic ended the day in first place after two regattas. Despite being confident of achieving a good score at the end of the Championship, given their knowledge of Atlantic waters, the Croatian team also mentioned the fierce competition encountered.

The French Alexandre Rossignoli and David Boudgroud finished the day in second, followed by the Russian team Basalkin Arten and Ignatenko Egor, in third.

The day’s best ranked Portuguese on 470 were Tomás Silva and Ricardo Schedel, placed in 10th on the overall score.
Tomás Silva admits that the team’s goal is to end the championship among the first 10. 'It was a hard but succeeded day. With such strong winds we had to manoeuvre faster and overcome our lesser experience, if compared with certain competing crews'

Once again the Israelite double-hand team, Amit Brokeman and Moshe Apple, ended the day in first place on the 420 class sailing boats.

The current 420 World Champion New Zealander team, Carl Evans and Peter Burling, arrived in second.

The Portuguese António Rosa and Francisco Lacerda keep a leading position, arriving in forth position.

Day 1 Report:

At the end of the first day of competition, among early starts and good scores, the Portuguese still hope of making the Gold Fleet.

The Italians Luca and Roberto Dubbini ranked first in ex-aequo with the Croations Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic, on 470 class sailing boats, the former with a handycap for winning one regatta.

The double-hand British team, Luke Patience and Twiggy Grube scored third in the day’s 470 class regattas.

The best qualified Portuguese were Tomás Silva e Ricardo Schedel, ranking sixth. Tomás Silva does not conceal a certain disappointment: 'On what concerns the regattas, it clearly isn’t the best score. We maid a few technical mistakes costing us speed despite the good wind. Hopefully we’ll do better tomorrow'.

The Portuguese team Piedade Colaço and Mariana Lobato were placed nine in the overall score.

On the 420 class competition, the Portuguese António Pereira and Afonso Prieto ended third. Amit Brokman and Moshe Appel, representing Israel, arrived in first place.

The both World and Europe 420 British champions, Hannah Mills and Peggy Webster finished the day in second.

The double-hand British team came to Tavira to defend their title. Webster states: 'Tavira waters are easier to sail then Lake Garda’s (where last year’s European Championship took place), where the wind blows harder'.

Mills hopes for mild wind because, as with most ladies teams, that is how she prefers to compete.

The Portuguese sports sailors Bernardo Freitas and Manuel Arriaga reached the 16th place in the overall score.
